More legislation in Iowa is targeting the controversial red light and speed cameras. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would have cities that have the cameras send the revenue to the state's road fund. It was just approved by a House sub-committee.
Davenport and Muscatine have the cameras and officials say they keep roads safe and free up officers. Revenue from tickets in Davenport goes toward traffic enforcement and overtime at the police department. "The problem for us would be to continue to pay these people to run the program, but not have the benefit of the funds that it's generating," said Chief Frank Donchez.
A portion of the money from tickets would still go to pay companies contracted to run the cameras. Anything beyond that would go to the state. This is one of several Iowa bills this year trying to put restrictions on traffic cameras.
