Iowa American Water crews are on the scene of a water main break in Bettendorf that is causing problems for area homes.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. this morning, a water main broke in the vicinity of Woodland Lane and Hillside Drive. Water from the break entered into the city's sewer system, which created a surcharge in the line.

KWQC'S Mark Stevens is reporting from a city press conference that potentially 28 homes are seeing sewer backups. The city does not know the exact number because they cannot get into some homes.

The city has sent out letters to these residents offering to pay for clean up, a stay at hotel for the night and port-a-potty services if the water isn't back on by tomorrow.

Homes downstream from the surcharge have experienced backup into their homes. These homes are located in the vicinity of Heatherlane and Hillside Drive. The water main was closed at 11:45 a.m., which ended the surcharged event. Grant Wood Elementary School was closed due to the water main break.
