An East Moline man has been charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.

Michael Coulter, 44, of 22100 Six St. Court in East Moline, is alleged to have had an encounter with a loose dog at his residence where an Australian Shepherd allegedly charged him and his own dogs.

The dog had gotten loose from a tie out chain in the 2000 block of Sixth St. Court around 11 p.m. when the dog owner reported that while looking for the dog around 11:30 p.m., she heard a single gunshot.

Coulter's dog got in a fight with the loose Australian Shepherd but neither Coulter nor his dogs were injured in the encounter.

Coulter is alleged to have retrieved a 12 gauge Browning semi-automatic shotgun from his home and shot the Australian Shepherd near the intersection of 21st Avenue and 6th Street Court.

Coulter is alleged to have fired a single 12 gauge shot that killed the dog and is also alleged to have taken the dog to a remote rural location in Mercer County to dispose the dog in a creek outside Aledo.

Coulter turned himself in and posted bond on the charges.
