Teacher Is Tops!

Updated:

Teacher Laura McCreery is a motivator. Students say she makes learning exciting and fun. What can I do different is the question she asks herself every day. Those are some of the reasons why Laura has been selected as the Outstanding Iowa Biology Teacher of the Year for 2012.

Laura teaches Advanced Biology at Davenport North High School. Students says she  constantly challenges them. She makes hands on learning fun. Dylan Beyhl calls it the element of surprise. If one approach is not working, try something else.

Laura is also a big advocate of applied learning. She says students have information at their hands, but what they do with that information is very important. Student Anna Dressler really enjoys that approach.

Laura was nominated for the award by one of her teaching colleagues at Davenport North. She also had to have four letters of recomendation, fill out an application which included essays, and provide a video of her teaching a lesson. The award is given out by the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Laura is in her tenth year of teaching at North. Ironically, she teaches in the same classroom where she studied biology when she was a North High Student. She graduated from North in 1999.

Laura McCreery describes herself as a scientist by nature. She says everyday is an experiment in learning. Her mission is to develop students who think analytically. She calls it her dream job.
