As the snowfall starts winding down, many of you have or will be outside shoveling your sidewalks. But if you're an elderly or disabled person living in Davenport, there's a group of volunteers who will do all that shoveling for you.

"I think it's the first time in my life I've been classified as an angel but you know what? I'll take it!" Mike Clifton is a Davenport Snow Angel. He clears snow off of sidewalks for people who can't do it by themselves.

The City of Davenport requires residents to shovel off their sidewalk within 10 hours after the snow stops falling but, if you're elderly or disabled, it's not that easy.

"Warms the heart up so much just being able to give back to the needs of these type of people," said Clifton.

"I retired recently. So, I have a lot of time on my hands and I should volunteer more." It's a brand new program, but Snow Angels seemed like a perfect fit for Clifton.

"This is the first winter we've ever done this for the City of Davenport," said Kim Hatfield, coordinator for the Davenport Volunteer Connection.

"It's going well," she said.

Davenport residents 60 years and older, or residents with a physical disability, are invited to sign up for snow shoveling help.

"They do not have to tip anyone, do not have to open up their doors and let anybody into their home," said Clifton. "We really want to make this a very safe initiative."

About 50 Davenport residents have already signed up for their very own Snow Angels. Right now, there are 40 volunteers. But organizers say there's always room for more Snow Angels.
