Close to freezing temperatures makes for perfect weather to take a chilly dip in ice-cold waters. At least that's what they're saying for the Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Illinois coming up this weekend. On Sunday, dozens will take the plunge at Wick's Lake behind Jumer's Casino in Rock Island.
Many will be with teams and in costume as they get into what's almost a completely frozen lake. We joined crews Tuesday as they cut a hole in the ice and divers tested the water. They pulled out sticks or other safety hazards to make sure it's ready for the plungers. At about 38 degrees the water is substantially colder compared to last year's plunge.
"The beach we had sand, now we have ice and snow so won't be quite as warm, but just as much fun," said organizer Dianne Feehan Hoyte.
Money the plungers raise will help fun training and competitions for Special Olympics athletes. Last year, the Rock Island plunge raised close to $33,000. Organizers hope to beat that this time. You can still join in. CLICK HERE for more information on how to get involved or donate.
