New measures on curbing fire arms are one step closer to passing on Capitol Hill.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bi-partisan bill aimed at combating illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing.
The measure passed by a vote of 11 to 7. Iowa Senator Charles Grassley was the only Republican who supported the bill.
This is the first such vote in Congress since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The bill would carry penalties of up to 25 years in prison for buying guns for prohibited individuals who use them in a crime.
Votes on the controversial issue of assault weapons and expanded background checks are still on the table.
