UPDATE

A Western Illinois University student has been arrested for his involvement in a hoax earlier this week regarding a man with a gun.

Authorities said it appears the entire incident was made up Wednesday night after Alvin Montgomery, 25, called 9-1-1 to report a man with a gun.

Police were dispatched to the area and evacuations were ordered and a search ensued for more than five hours. Police never found a gunman and said they have charged Montgomery with making a false 9-1-1 call and attempting obstruction of justice.

The W.I.U. student was taken into police custody while he was on campus.

Authorities are also seeking restitution for the total cost of resources used in responding to the prank call.

Police in Macomb are searching for the person who reported a hostage situation

"We have concluded everything so far at 509 West Murray," Macomb Police Chief Curt Baker said. "At this time we believe it is a prank call."

Macomb police evacuated several homes in the 500 block of West Murray Street. The location is several blocks from Western Illinois University's main campus.

Officers said someone called 911 to report a person with a gun inside a home. The home was empty.

Police are now trying to trace the phone that was used to make the 911 call.
