Rockridge To Close Reynolds Elementary

The Rockridge School District serves kids between Taylor Ridge, Reynolds, Andalusia and Illinois City. It's about 15 miles from of the Quad Cities.

Monday night, March 11, 2013, officials voted to close Reynolds Elementary School.

In doing so, five employees will lose their jobs.

In addition, the district will now only have three primary schools.

Taylor Ridge and Illinois City will have students from kindergarten to second grade, while 3rd through 5th graders will attend Andalusia.

Sixth graders will now move to the junior high/ high school which is combined.

The district is facing a $1.3million deficit for the next school year.

Three full time teachers will be cut as well as three part time positions.  There are also two that will be retiring and one resignation. In all, nine teachers will not be replaced for the next school year.

School leaders blame the state's lack of funding and share the frustration with parents of students in the district.

"Seems like every year, every two years, we have a big meeting like this and I do not see the end of this happening soon," says parent, Patrick Peterson.

By closing the school, the district expect to save one million dollars over 10 years.

Reynolds Elementary will be closed this fall.
