Tonight, Davenport Aldermen will discuss making Harrison Street two-lanes from Locust to Fifth.

The two outer lanes would be used for parking, the western lane will be used for traffic between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. during busy morning hours, there will be three lanes of traffic.

Outside those hours, the third lane will be used for parking. Several different businesses are located on that stretch of Harrison.

The city has been working for years to revitalize that part of the Hilltop Campus Village.and lack of parking has been a big problem.

A traffic study led the city to a decision, to keep Harrison a one-way street with two lanes of traffic and two parking lanes.

"It's more pedestrian friendly," Davenport traffic engineer Gary Statz said. "You don't have cars driving 2 feet away from you when you're on the sidewalk, you have a little bit of buffer between you and the driving public."

The city will put up corresponding signs and also plans to re-paint the street.
