A Black Hawk County sheriff's department K-9 will soon get a bulletproof vest thanks to an online campaign.

The organization that sponsored the effort hopes to raise nearly $100 thousand to provide 100 police dogs with vests nationwide.

"With the K-9s, they're going into an area first They're usually our first line of defense going into a house to search for somebody or an open area in a field or something," Deputy Matt Harris said. "You know apprehend a suspect. They should have every bit of the protection that we have afforded to us."

The department is still looking for donations.
