Free Tax Preparation For Those Who Qualify In The Quad Cities

DAVENPORT, IA – The IRS just reported that an estimated 984,400 taxpayers who qualified for a return in 2009 did not file a federal income tax return.  The amount available is over $917 million and half of the potential returns for 2009 are over $500.

To take advantage of these 2009 returns, you must file with the IRS no later than Monday, April 15.  If you live in a household with an income of $57,000 or less, you can file your current year and back taxes dating to 2009 for free through the free tax preparation services that are open now through April.

Last year, families who used this service, on average, received a return of around $1,600 and saved approximately $120 on preparation fees.  They also received their return quickly, didn't have to worry about hidden fees and could take advantage of all qualifying tax credits.

To make an appointment to file for the current year and back taxes, you can dial 2-1-1, (563) 355-9900 or visit

On April 6, people can walk-in or make appointments at three sites that aren't fully booked yet.  These sites (below) also will offer free credit checks and the ability to open a bank account on-site.

This service is made possible through The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax-Aide programs.  Together, they provide trained volunteer preparers who help taxpayers take full advantage of all qualifying tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).  Most returns are filed electronically and taxpayers can expect to receive their refunds within seven to ten business days.
