Smoke Inhalation Cause Of Death For 5 Near Sherrard

Authorities have released the cause of death for the five people killed in the fire in Sherrard, Ill.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Department says autopsies show the cause of death as smoke inhalation.

A mother, her daughter and three other children died in the fire early Wednesday morning, March 27, 2013.

Although it has already been reported, the sheriff's department said Friday it won't confirm the identities of the victims until DNA tests are completed by the state crime lab.

Sheriff Tom Thompson says there's no indication of foul play, although investigators still are trying to determine how the fire started.

Update: The Sherrard Community School District issued a statement on how it plans to help students in dealing with the tragedy as they return to school from spring break on Monday:

"The Sherrard administrative team and counseling team have been working closely together since Wednesday morning when we received news of the tragic fire that killed one of our parents and four of our students.

The teams plan to meet again on Sunday to review the crisis plan and be ready to deal with grieving students, parents and staff on Monday and throughout the week. A phone call will go out to parents on Sunday evening with more details."  Superintendent Rodocker.

A fund has been set up to help the families. Click here...
