Music In The Morgan Manner

In the 1930's and 40's, Big Band Music was extremely popular. Jack Morgan of Rapids City is the son of famous band leader Russ Morgan.

Russ Morgan started his own orchestra in 1935. The band traveled throughout the country, playing in many of the most famous hotels. Russ Morgan played the trombone and described his band's style as Music In The Morgan Manner.

When Jack Morgan was thirteen, he received a trombone as a birthday present. Four years later, he was playing the trombone in his dad's band. Jack has preserved and catalogued an impressive collection of his father's original arrangements. The signature piece is You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You.  Jack says there are more than eight hundred renditions of that song. Dean Martin, Perry Como and Little Richard all recorded versions.

Along the way, Russ Morgan rubbed elbows with some of the biggest names from the world of entertainment. Danny Thomas, Milton Berle and Bob Hope to name a few.

Jack joined his dad's band in 1958 and when he father passed away in 1969, Jack Morgan took over as band leader. He never changed one note of all the old standards that his father had played and composed. Jack Morgan played fifty two years in the Russ Morgan Orchestra and was band leader for forty one years.

The father and son kept the band going for seventy five years. Russ Morgan from 1935-1969. Jack Morgan from 1969-2010. Jack says the two had the longest running, name band in the country. Only two band leaders for all those years. That's Music In The Morgan Manner!
