Norman Sawyer's Road To Recovery

Updated:

One year ago, cattle farmer Norman Sawyer was paralyzed in an ATV accident.

"I was ducking underneath a wire which I had done many times before. This time it didn't work so well," Sawyer said.

"I was out in the pasture. Got pulled off my four-wheeler and landed on my neck. Broke my neck."

Norman suffered a serious spinal cord injury. After three major surgeries and a year of rehabilitation, Norman has come home.

"I'm still trying to adjust and I probably always will be."

The home had to be remodeled for a wheelchair. There's a new ramp leading into the house, a new conversion van to fit his wheelchair. An elevator, or lift, has been installed so Norman can get from one floor to another.

All of the necessary changes have been costly ones. So, the community is holding a "Road to Recovery" benefit for Norman and his wife, Lorna.

"Makes me feel very gracious towards them," he said. "I'm just overwhelmed at all their thoughts about it."

Norman is inspired by the support of his community. He hopes, one day, he can become someone else's inspiration.

"I don't know how I could help them but if I can I certainly want to be there for them."

What Norman doesn't realize is, he's already inspired us all.
