A Quad City girl is being honored for her personal perseverance and efforts to help others battling the same problem.

Tuesday morning, April 9, 2013 Mallory Obenauf received Prudential Spirit of Community Award and the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Mallory is an 8th grader at John F. Kennedy Catholic School in Davenport. She was recognized for not only overcoming severe scoliosis (curvature of the spine), but also helping others with the same condition.

"At age five I was diagnosed with scoliosus and as I grew it got worse. So I had to have surgery for that and I was very scared. So, after I had my surgery, I thought, 'oh, that's not so bad.' And I saw how other kids were scared too. So I decided to talk to them and help them through it."

Along with personal visits, Obenauf wrote a book to share her experience and help others.
