The statue stood in front of Sacred Heart Church for 15 years.

The 100 year old, 5 foot tall depiction of Jesus stood there - over looking 5th Avenue.

But on Easter - it was attacked - leaving the statue without arms and with a gaping hole on the right side.

Police are still looking for the person who committed the crime.

But - Sacred Heart Church once had a school attached to it.

Some of those teachers still in the Rock Island Catholic School System.

They say it needs to be replaced - If only to make it easier for people to move on.

"I think we might have taken advantage of it," says Debbie Mernier, a long time teacher in Rock Island. "We walked in front of it so many times."

Mernier worked at Sacred Heart for two years - taking her students to mass every Tuesday.

Walking past that statue every time.

She says the Easter attack hurt many people throughout the entire parish.

But for the teachers that worked there - seeing the statue lying on the ground the next day - was simply devastating.

"It was such a symbol for the whole community, absolutely beautiful.I think everyone looked at as such a special place," says fellow teacher Rita Herron.

Church leaders are trying to find a way to replace the statue - but at a price tag of $20000-30,000- it's a steep climb.

But several people from the community have come forward- wanting to help restore what some call- a piece of Quad City history.

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity to be able to have it put back and get it in the right spot," says Herron.

But she adds, if it can't be repaired - something needs to be put in it's place.

"Something similar. Not too different. We are too used to seeing that there."
