City Of Rock Island Flood Preparations

The City of Rock Island reported their flood preparation plans on Thursday morning, April 18, 2013:

The City of Rock Island is preparing for river flooding including installing pumps, closing gatewells, placing temporary flood panels, barricading, and sandbagging.

Sunset Park and Sunset Marina will be closed to drive-through traffic this evening, April 18, 2013. Access to the marina for lease-holders will be by foot only. Power at the marina will be turned off and the fuel dock closed today. The Sunset Marina office will remain open.

The Great River Trail, or bike path, will be closed today from the Crescent Bridge to the Moline Border.

The road will be closed at the viaduct on 5th Avenue between 39th and 41st Streets today.

The temporary flood panels will be installed at Schwiebert Riverfront Park today. The areas north of the panels including the urban beach and waterfront promenade will flood at 18 feet, and the park was designed to accommodate this. Areas south of the flood panels are within the protected area, will not flood, and should remain open.

"Although the river levels are rising fast, City employees are now working on flood preparation. Given past experiences, we are confident the City will be ready for any flooding," commented Thomas Thomas, City Manager.
