Taking steps to end violence against women. An upcoming event in Princeton, Illinois aims to raise awareness of the issue. Men especially will be taking a stand while sporting some special footwear.
Not many men are willing to squeeze into a pair of 6-inch, glitter-covered, platform high heels. But in a few weeks all sorts of husbands in heels, sons in stilettos, and pappas in pumps will invade downtown Princeton, Illinois.
"My size 13 high heels are sitting in my office, customers go by, right a check and it goes right into the high heel," said Christian Cyr, a Freedom House board member.
"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" is an event held all over the country. Men walk one mile in women's footwear to take a stand against rape and violence. This will be a first year for the fundraiser in Princeton. It's organized to benefit the Freedom House, a place providing shelter an assistance to women in need for now 30 years.
"It's about educating, about advocacy. These young ladies don't even know how to stop what's happening to them," added Cyr.
Last year alone Freedom House had 10,000 overnight stays. Women who often have no where else to turn. "I want to say it saved my life because I don't know where I would be now," said Sabine Richcreek. Richcreek is originally from Austria and was about five years old when she was first sexually abused by a family friend. It didn't stop there.
"Assaulted by another three adult males and it was for a period of about 10-12 years altogether," said Richcreek.
Freedom House gave her the tools to better live with those memories. Now, she's sharing her story and hoping to fill the streets with people supporting an end to crimes like these. Men will be stepping out in their strappy shoes, and that's enough to turns some heads for a good cause.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is May 18th from 1-4 p.m. in  Soldier's and Sailor's Park in Princeton. Register at freedomhouseillinois.org or by calling 815-872-0087
