The Odeon Still Stands in Clinton

Updated:

A fire five moths ago.

Today - the rubble is still there, blowing potentially dangerous material into peoples yards.

The Odeon night club went up in flames in November.

Fire crews tried to save the historic building in Clinton, Ia but were unable to.

And they were never able to find a cause.

Now - the insurance company is looking into the fire, so nothing can be touched at the site.

But neighbors aren't willing to wait.

"When the wind picks up, it blows debris over the fence," says Sherry Ralston.

She has lived next to the Odeon for years.

She was sad to see it shut down, but now she says it's starting to cause major problems.

"We've found nails that come out of there (onto my yard)"

But city officials here in Clinton say there is nothing that can be done.

By law, no one is able to do any cleanup around the burn site until the insurance company says it's investigation is completely done.

And that could take months, if not years.

But neighbors say that isn't good enough and the area is a danger to anyone who lives near it.

"It's an eyesore," says Noelle Hahn, who lives just across from the wreckage. "I know there is a lot of children in the area and some of them I know are getting into it. I'm not sure if they are climbing the fence or what but I know they have talked about seeing things and touching things in it."

"I've got lung problems," says Ralston. "I sit outside a lot and take a lot of walks and if the wind is really bad and blowing, you inhale it."

Fire officials say any asbestos or airborne issues shouldn't be a problem with the building for now.

The damp weather keeps that under control.

And as long as no one disturbs the wreckage - nothing will spread.

Regardless - people want to see the piles of burned material go away.
