Quad City utility company, MidAmerican Energy, is warning customers about a possible telephone scam in Illinois.

According to a news release, since last week, dozens of its Illinois customers have reported receiving recorded messages claiming to be from Ameren, a utility company which serves parts of Illinois and Missouri. The message states that Ameren can help customers save money on their utility bills. In some cases, MidAmerican says the robocalls were sent to the same phone number multiple times within a day or week.

Illinois does allow competition between suppliers of electricity, but MidAmerican Energy wants its customers to know that there are no alternative retail electric suppliers registered to solicit MidAmerican Energy customers in Illinois and that Ameren is not making these calls. MidAmerican Energy is working with Ameren, the Illinois Commerce Commission and local authorities to determine the source of the calls.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and notify local law enforcement authorities. You can also contact MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the incident and seek assistance.

You can find more information about MidAmerican Energy Company at www.midamericanenergy.com.

For more information about alternative retail electric suppliers in Illinois, go to the Illinois Commerce Commission website http://pluginillinois.org/faq.aspx
