Gas Leak In Rock Falls Forces Evacuation

UPDATE: NICOR has shut off the valve for the gas main that was broken and is waiting for the gas in the line to finish leaking before they proceed with repairs.

Police say some residents have been allowed to return home.

ORIGINAL: Rock Falls Police have confirmed a gas leak within the city limits.

They say people are being evacuated along a three block area on Dixon Ave. between Emmons Ave. and Wiker Dr.

According to the Rock Falls Fire Department, a city crew hit a 6 inch gas line on Dixon Ave while digging for a water main around 8:00 a.m.

NICOR has been called to shut down the leak.

Officials say the evacuation is affecting a mostly residential area.
