Trains Derail Near Grand Junction Iowa

A train derailment in central Iowa Thursday morning created a big mess.

The Greene County Sheriff says it happened about a half mile east of Grand Junction, a little before 7:00 a.m.

Grand Junction is located about 60 miles northwest of Des Moines.

The sheriff says it happened on a double set of Union Pacific tracks.

The initial investigation shows a west bound cargo train was sitting on the tracks, when a train carrying coal passed by, had some sort of malfunction and derailed.

Cars from the east bound train pushed into the west bound train, and that caused 35 cars to slide down an embankment.

Union Pacific crews will be on the scene all day today and through the night. They hope to have the line reopen by tomorrow morning.

Officials say no one was inured.
