Rock Island City Council To Decide Fate Of Audubon School

Updated:

Rock Island city leaders will decide Monday night, May, 13, 2013, if the old Audubon School is a historical landmark.

The preservation committee said last month that the school on 18th Avenue was a landmark, despite opposition from the school board.

The school district has signed an agreement to sell the school to make way for a new Fareway foods store.

The sale can not continue without a two thirds vote from the city council overturning the historical landmark decision.

"It's such a beautiful building too. I don't know what they could make use of it but it's sad it's going to be gone," says Rachel Hayden, a nearby resident.

The school building has sat empty now for more than two years.
