Improving Mississippi River Disaster Management

Updated:

There are new efforts to improve management of the Mississippi River including response to extreme weather situations.

Senator Dick Durbin said the Senate just approved legislation that would include a study of the entire Mississippi River basin for the first time ever.

This comes after a drought last year and low water levels that threatened to halt barge traffic all the way to the other extreme with flooding this spring.

The study would aim to give a better understanding of the basin functions and how to keep safe and reliable navigation on the river.
