St. Ambrose University got a rare glimpse into its past Thursday morning, May 23, 2013.

The Ambrose Hall cornerstone was opened today and the contents were displayed.

The cornerstone was originally sealed in 1885.

The university's historical expert, the Rev. George McDaniel was there to analyze the contents that were placed in a copper box 128 years ago and placed into the building five days after the first graduation.

A copy of the dedication program, local newspapers and other documents were found inside with what seems to be severe water damage.

University officials say attempts will be made to preserve the historic documents.

Ambrose Hall is currently undergoing a $5 million renovation.
