Quad City Memorial Day Events


We're coming up on Memorial Day in the Quad Cities. To look for events that are taking place this weekend, check out our event calendar. Here is a small sampling of events that are taking place on Monday's Memorial Day.

QC Criterium

The 48th annual Quad Cities Criterium returns to the streets of downtown Rock Island on Monday, May 27th.

Fourteen Criterium bicycle races and eight races for children will be held. The Quad Cities Criterium is the fourth race in the Memorial Day Weekend series of bicycle racing. The event is the culmination of a weekend of racing throughout the area including races in Burlington, IA and Muscatine, IA. The event features over 650 cyclists - men and women riders from novice to professional, from 10 to over 60 years of age, representing all parts of the United States, Canada and Europe. The competitive racing reaches speeds up to 35 mph throughout the
streets of downtown Rock Island.

Races begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude at 6:00 p.m. The Quad Cities Bicycle Club and The District host this event.

Milan Memorial Day Service

A ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th, 2013, at the Milan American Legion Post, 515 W. 1st Avenue, Milan, IL.

U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Darryl Howlett of the Naval Operations Support Center, Rock Island Arsenal will speak at the 11:00AM ceremony in front of the Legion building.  Post officials will lay a wreath commemorating the service of veterans of all wars at the foot of a monument on the buildings front lawn, as the Honor Guard fires a 21 guns salute.

Immediately following that ceremony, the public is invited to stay for lunch provided by both Post members as well as by the American Legion Auxiliary.  There is no charge for the lunch, although free-will donations to help cover the meal expenses are appreciated.

Bettendorf Memorial Service

Veterans Memorial, celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Keynote speakers will include Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher and Maj. Gen. Kendall Penn from the First Army.

Walnut Grove Pioneer Village

There will be performances by the Wapsi Wranglers and a Kickapoo Indian dancer, kids' crafts, games, and food. John and Kay Retzl will perform on Sunday and Johnny Outlaw will play on Monday. Costumed interpreters will demonstrate crafts and sell their wares. Admission is $2; $1 for ages 5-12; free for ages 4 and under. Call 563-328-3283 for details.

Moline Memorial Day Event

American Legion Post 227 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. at 9th Street Commons, 9th Street and 15th Avenue, East Moline. Vietnam War veteran William Albracht will speak. Call 309-755-3111 for details. 

Allen Grove Cemetery Service

A Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Allen's Grove Cemetery, 27631 Allen's Grove Road, Donahue. Col. Scott Lofreddo, ASC chief of staff, will speak. A luncheon will follow at Larry M. Gronewold Post 532, 27225 115th Ave.
