Ashford University Makes Layoff Announcement

Updated:

The Ashford University Campus in Clinton was quiet Friday. Most of the faculty and student body are on summer break. But the campus may become quieter still as the school's parent company, Bridgepoint Education, has announced voluntary layoffs.

The goal is to align the employee base with enrollment numbers, which are down.

Total enrollment at Bridgepoint Education's academic institutions, which includes Ashford, dipped from nearly 95,000 students last year to less than 79,000 this year.

According to the 1st quarter earning report of 2013, Bridgepoint Education lost nearly $30 million in revenue in comparison with the same period in 2012.

Ashford University employs roughly 400 people. University officials won't say how many employees they aim to cut but "hundreds" have been given the option to voluntarily resign.

Faculty and certain other departments are exempt from the voluntary layoffs. Those resigning will receive three months salary in severance.
