A Step Towards Resolution For Niabi Elephants

Monday, June 17, 2013 is a big day for Sophie and Babe.

A man who surveyed the zoo last year is meeting with the Rock Island County Board (who controls the zoo) to discuss what he thinks should happen with the pachyderms.

The initial assessment said the elephants needed to be moved to a warmer and bigger area - due to stricter American Zoo Association standards.

Niabi lost their accreditation and is trying to get it back.

Moving the elephants may be the first part of that.

Having elephants at zoos is actually a rarity in the Midwest due to regulations.

Des Moines, Chicago, Minneapolis and Omaha are all places that say they would love to have elephants but don't have the areas to put them during long Midwest Winters.
