New Business District For Galesburg

Galesburg city leaders are focused on a new development on the city's north side.

They're set to meet with a developer Monday, June 17, 2013 who wants to build a new hotel and retail store on Seminary Street just south of Highway 34.

The plan also calls for relocating Aldi's grocery.

Mayor John Pritchard says council members and the developer will meet Monday to create a new business district and sign a letter of intent, spelling out expectations on both sides as the project moves forward.

He says it has the potential to bring in more than $200,000 in new sales tax revenue each year.

"It also goes to support the Orpheum Theatre Project and the tourism council. so in terms of dollars and cents, this makes a lot of sense for Galesburg."

The new business district would include an increase of one percent in sales tax for companies that move into it.

That would pay for new roads and traffic lights that would be needed and could cost more than a million dollars.
