There are signs of progress in opening a new, expanded Menards store in Davenport. Crews are out clearing trees and getting the 65th St. site ready for construction.

The Wisconsin-based home improvement retailer has been trying to build a bigger store in Davenport since 2005, but has run into delays, many which had to do with the current store on 53rd St.

Now, company officials plan to meet with city leaders at a later date to discuss the idea of turning the existing store into a self-storage facility. Company spokesman Jeff Abbot says the property is still for sale, but this gives them an option that would allow them to proceed with a new building. Abbot says they have converted two other former stores into self-storage facilities, one in Eau Claire and the other in Sheboygan.

"We are considering doing the same in Davenport, but ideally we prefer to sell the building," he added.

He says the current 53rd location will remain open until the new store is completed.

"We're getting started on a new store in Davenport that we hope to open in 2014," Abbot said.
