Kindergarten Readiness Kits Distributed By United Way

Updated:

The United Way took advantage of the longest day of the year to advance education.

Today the United Way hosted a day of action. Volunteers came together to distribute 500 free kindergarten readiness kits to Quad City kid's front doors.

A survey found that one out of six children in the Quad Cities enters kindergarten without the necessary skills to succeed. Organizers hope to change these statistics with these readiness kits.

"We are trying to get kids prepared to have a positive experience because we want to see the graduation rate of high schoolers improve," COO of the United Way Quad Cities Jerry Jones said. "So we're in it for the long haul. We're starting with the young ones. We have strategies for all kids of different ages."

Each kit included games and materials to help children under five practice sharing, teamwork, and patience.

There was also a list for parents of skills children need to be ready for kindergarten.
