Severe Weather Causes Widespread Damage in Rock Island County

Updated:

In Rock Island County a lot of issues are stemming from straight line winds. There are a few places though where it's hard to imagine straight line winds having that kind of power.

Looking around the damage left behind by the severe weather that rolled through here, it's very hard to miss.

You can see a very, very large tree completely blocking the roadway at the corner of 85th Ave and 51st St. It's one of several trees we've seen down in this area of Rock Island.

Branches are down all over the place. Some fell on houses, cars and businesses. On Big Island, one home had a large tree fall on its roof, causing extensive damage inside and outside. Most of the trees around that house were uprooted, and it appears that the wind lifted the roof off the garage, and sucked a bicycle nearly all the way out through the top.

We've also seen a semi truck on its side in a parking lot and heard reports of others in that same situation.

A garage door on one industrial building blown in. We saw a few roofs blown off businesses.

On Andalusia Road in Rock Island, there were a couple of large power poles taken down by the wind. Traffic was being diverted in both directions. On that same road, two stop lights and a few street signs were blown over as well.

It's evident that there's a lot of damage from whatever came through here and it's going to be a lot of cleanup. We're already seeing some of that underway.
