Investigation At Fort Madison Prison

Inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary are under orders of restricted movement while prison officials investigate the discovery of contraband in the facility. According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, during a routine search of the upper cell house, officers found items in an attic space that included a 17 foot rope and a bottle containing an unknown substance. A second search in the area produced another 10 foot rope and another bottle of an unknown substance.

Officials say the ropes were fashioned with braided sheets. Other items discovered were sheets, blankets, gloves and sand paper.

The incident remains under investigation, which will include testing to identify the unknown liquid substances. In the meantime, the prison and clinic will remain under restricted movement until the investigation is finished
