A barge hit a protection cell on the east side of the BNSF bridge in Burlington, Iowa.

The accident happened around 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning, July 1, 2013.

BNSF officials say a protection cell is a buffer that is meant to protect the bridge from being hit.

According to officials when the barge hit the cell this morning, it came apart and now the remaining parts are resting against the bridge.

An inspection team checked over the bridge and didn't find any structural damage.

Traffic resumed on the bridge at 9:00 a.m.

According to BNSF, the Coast Guard will determine how to handle the removal of the barges from the bridge.
