Quinn Signs School Safety Legislation

Updated:

A new law in Illinois is aimed at school safety and preparing for the worst. On July 1, Governor Pat Quinn signed the law.

It's an amendment to a school safety drill act already in place. The new measure will require school districts in the state to include a safety drill for the possibility of a shooting incident.

"I think this is a model law that requires our law enforcement in local communities to work with local school districts on having a safety drill that makes sense with respect to any kind of possible violence or shooting incident in the school," Quinn said.

Currently, districts already conduct a minimum of six drills throughout the school year including severe weather drills but this new law requires law enforcement participate in the safety drill.
