Davenport city leaders met Tuesday night to discuss a plan to keep residents from getting raw backup in their basements.

At next week's council meeting, leaders say they will make a motion to approve a plan that would increase residents' sewage bills by $2 every three months.

The city will use that money to reimburse property owners affected by the sewage problems. Each resident could claim up to $7,500 per year under the program.

Those property owners would be required to install backflow prevention devices in order to be reimbursed. City leaders say they may also be reimbursed for the device. They must also sign a release of any claims against the city.
