Rock Island emergency crews were called to the Rock River Sunday on a report that two people went over the dam and one was trapped in the rushing water. The fire department was dispatched at 4:54 p.m.

Several area departments responded. The Rock Island Fire Department sent ambulances to the Backwater Gamblers' water ski site, which is the closest location to put boats in on that part of the river.

When they arrived, a witness told them that two people, each riding a personal watercraft, went over the dam.

One man was caught in the current at the base of the dam. He was eventually rescued. The other apparently went under.
