Fire Destroys Wyoming, Iowa Business

Updated:

Fire destroyed a down town eatery in Wyoming, Iowa.

Crews were called to the Jones County town just before 2:00 p.m., Sunday July 21, 2013, when flames ripped through Ted's Swinging Door Bar on West Main.

They battled the fire for hours and worked to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings.

One of those buildings included the Historical Museum next door, where workers hurried to move whatever they could out of harms way.

Jim Eichhorn, the Chairman of the Wyoming Historical Museum, described the effort.

"We started out moving things we had to make some priority decisions real quick. We wanted paper and pictures first, so we could move the fastest and just had to work 'till the smoke got so think no one could see to work up there."

Firefighters were able to contain the fire just to the bar building, which is a total loss.

They used an excavator to bring it down, keeping the fire and heat away from neighboring structures.

Fire officials say the water supply was a major challenge.
they had to pump in water from a nearby creek and haul it in from neighboring communities to knock down the flames.
