Businesses Aim to Cash in on Mississippi Valley Fair

Officials estimate more than 300,000 guests will turn out at the Mississippi Valley Fair this week. The Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the fair will bring in at least $3 million into the local economy.

The bureau said most of that money will be spent at the fair or area gas stations. But some businesses in the area surrounding the fair are trying to cash in nonetheless. Businesses spent Tuesday opening their parking lots up to fair-goers who were willing to pay, handing out freebies, or extending their hours.

The convention and visitors bureau said it can be difficult to attract fair-goers who are focused only on the fair. But area businesses said they just hope to at least get their names out there to all the guests in the area this week. They said their goal is to get some of them to return in the future and shop or eat at their businesses.
