Fair Offers Healthy Options

After the Quad cities ranked second nationally in highest heart attack rates, we wanted to know if people at this year's Mississippi Valley Fair were being more health-conscious. Most said they weren't – they were more interested in having a good time and getting the full fair experience by eating funnel cakes and corndogs.

But for those looking for a healthier option - a quick tour of the fair revealed several vendors offering relatively healthier options like fresh fruits and vegetables. Local HyVee dietician Heather Wright said those are great options for any health-conscious fairgoer. Wright added roasted nuts and grilled foods can be good, too.

The majority of fair guests we spoke with said they don't like to worry about their health when they're at the fair – they feel it's alright to splurge on the fried foods. Wright said the key there is portion size and moderation. She suggested splitting the fried foods with a friend or family member rather than consuming the entire treat yourself.
