Dept. Of Justice Says Thomson Prison Is On Track

Illinois lawmakers met with the director of the Department of Justice's Bureau of Prisons on Thursday, August 1, 2013, to discuss the activation of Thomson Prison in Thomson, Ill.

Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Cheri Bustos say the director assured them the Department of Justice is moving forward with the process.

Last month a senate appropriations committee approved $166 million to reactivate Thomson as well as two other prisons.

The prison in Thomson was completed by the in 2001, but it's never fully opened due to money problems.

Then, last October, the federal government agreed to purchase it.

Full activation is expected to take two years, but a house version of this bill still needs to be passed.
