The first weekend in August marks the tax-free holiday weekend in Iowa. All clothes and shoes under $100 are tax-exempt Friday and Saturday. Shoppers are headed out to take advantage of deals at big box stores, but also at local small businesses, so it's a big shopping weekend for stores big and small.

"It just seems like everyone was shopping all around the board, from the malls to the big box to the consignment stores," Revolution In The Village Owner Lorena Bush says.

The consignment shop has only been open about three and a half years, but owner Lorena Bush says this weekend gives them a noticeable boost.

"In the past few years, we have seen an increase, I would say there's about a 25% increase in sales," Bush says.

With shoppers making it an all-day affair.

"It was almost like women were out shopping from early morning until all the way until 5:30 we were busy," Bush says.

At Encore of Davenport, this weekend gives them a bit of a boost too.

"We'll have empty inventory so we'll have to replenish," Owner Kim Morrissey says.

The owner says they'll see between 20 and 30 percent more customers over the next two days.

"They like to get a bargain so with that tax free day, it's kind of a nice little deduction," Morrissey says.

And it has people coming back for more.

"It brings in more business and people that don't usually shop consignment that come in just to see what we have and they'll come back," Morrissey says.

Though the weekend is a boost for some local stores, store managers say more could be taking advantage of the deal.

"I wish we'd see more [people in], I don't think people understand that it also includes everybody, not just kids and teachers," Four Seasons Davenport Manager Stacey Graham says, "Everybody can take advantage of the deal."

"That extra seven percent off is such a great addition to all the other specials we have going on in the store," Graham says.

Hoping next year will be bigger than the last.
