Changes Coming in Moline

Updated:

It's a story that TV6 has been following for months.

And now - it's taking a major step forward.

Tomorrow - the Moline School district is unveiling their plans to expand Hamilton Elementary School - a major part of the districts 3 year plan.

The plan is designed to save money for the district and bring schools up to date with changing technology.

But the plan also calls for closing two elementary schools - something many parents in the district have voiced anger over.

Still, district officials say those closings will pave the way for saving money and creating better education for all students in the district.

"We think it's going to be arguably the finest elementary facility in Northwestern Illinois and then some," Moyer says when talking about the Hamilton updates. "We believe it (the plan) has captured everything we're hoping for to support the types of instruction that we feel will help students."

The expansion will make room for students from Ericsson and Garfield - schools set to close within the next three years.

Right now - Hamilton is home to about 200 students but after all is said and done - it will be able to accommodate three times that population.

The plan also calls for better classrooms for the arts and English learning courses.

As well as upgrading wireless Internet capabilities - and creating better opportunities for what Moyer calls 21st century learning.

The Superintendent says he wants this new building to be something the people of Moline can be proud of.

"This is going to be one of the nicest buildings in Moline- much less just for education purposes. It's going to be a feather in everybody's cap and a great thing educationally."

If you would like to see the plans for the $17 million expansion project in person - the school board is scheduled to meet Monday, August 5 at 6:30. It will be held at John Deere Middle School.
