Young athletes will be up bright and early taking part in the Hy-Vee Ironkids Triathlon.

It will take place August 10th at the Bettendorf YMCA starting at 8 a.m.

An Ironkids event is formatted around the same basic swim-bike-run protocol as an adult triathlon, with distances adjusted based on the age of the participants.

Hunter Kemper, a four-time member of the U.S. Olympic triathlon team is in town conducting a triathlon clinic for youths. He will hand out awards at the Hy-Vee Ironkids event the following day.

"Triathlon is a sport anyone can do at any age," said Kemper. "It's a participatory sport mom and dads can do and a sport they do all the way through and later on life."

Kemper said participating in Ironkids events at a young age helped him reach the success he has found throughout his career, and that the event provides unique and valuable opportunities to the children participating.
