UPDATE: Officials with MidAmerica Pipeline company tell us the pipeline explosion is currently under investigation. They do not know what caused the burst that lead to massive flames.

The pipeline itself is a 10 inch diameter line for Ethane/propane fuel.

Officials say area residents should not experience any interruption to their natural gas service.

Authorities tell us all residents within a 1 mile radius of the explosion were evacuated. As of 7:30 AM all families were given permission to return to their homes. Albany Road is also back open for public use.

Pipeline management tells us they will continue to monitor the scene until the area is completely safe, and there are no threats of fire.

INITIAL STORY: A gas pipeline exploded in Whiteside County, Ill., just before midnight on Monday, August 12, 2013.

Whiteside County officials tell us Erie, Ill., crews were able to turn off the gas line, but that did not stop the flames.

The fire was so intense, the flames could be spotted from miles away.

Some reports came in from eye witnesses as far as Rock Falls, Ill., who reported they could see the glow.

Crews responded to the massive pipeline explosion near Interstate 88 and Albany Road, just north of Erie.

Residents living within a one mile radius were evacuated and a shelter was opened at the Erie Fire Department.

There were reportedly 20 people at the shelter at around 2:40 a.m. and more were anticipated to need assistance. That includes adults, children and even pets. The American Red Cross is currently on "stand by." Most families did not need shelter or assistance this morning.

Fire crews were able to get the fire under control, early Tuesday morning.

Crews from Enterprise Products are now working to cap the line.
