Charges Dropped Against One In Burlington Boating Deaths

Updated:

Prosecutors have dropped charges against one of two men accused of driving drunk in a deadly boating accident in Burlington, Iowa on May 19, 2012. After reviewing the evidence, the state felt it could not prove its case against Joseph Schier, Jr. beyond a reasonable doubt, so charges against him have been dismissed.

Last year, Schier, then 21, and 22-year old Douglas Metcalf were charged with involuntary manslaughter and boating while intoxicated. Prosecutors claimed the two were shuttling people to and from a party on an island in the O'Connell Slough on the Mississippi River when their Jon boats collided, sending several people into the water. Four young adults died: Caitlyn Atchley, Blake Eakins, Matt House and Jake Boyd. Eight others were hurt.

The criminal case against Metcalf is still moving forward.
