Prophetstown Awards Demolition Bid

Updated:

What remains of downtown Prophetstown, Illinois will soon come down. City leaders awarded a bid to 'Fischer Excavating' of Freeport.

Last month a fire ripped through the town's historic city center damaging eight buildings. Clean-up is expected to cost around $200,000.

The city will be responsible for any expenses not covered by insurance.

"We've opened an account, it's called Prophetstown Strong, and the donations from that account will help for cleanup and or building expense," said Prophetstown Mayor Steve Swanson.

There is another fund set up for victims of the fire and donations can be made to help them recover.

Demolition is expected to begin August 27th. It should take about three weeks to complete.
