The Moline Police Department is reporting a couple of unusual encounters involving school children Friday morning, Aug. 23, 2013, that prompted the school district to send out an alert to parents.

The first incident involved a man, dressed as a woman. The man, wearing a blonde wig, approached a girl walking to Wilson Middle school on 53rd St. and 12th Ave. Police say the girl was disturbed by the way the man was dressed, his behavior and comments, so she reported it to school officials. The suspect, 23-year-old Derek Argo, was found a few blocks away and charged with disorderly conduct.

In another incident, police say a girl was walking in the 1400 block of 19th Ave. to John Deere Middle School when an man walked toward her and as he passed, he reached around and grabbed her, then ran off. That girl also reported the incident and the Moline-Coal Valley School District sent out text and email alerts to inform parents. The man is described as white, tall and thin in his 20s wearing a white bandana with blue jeans and a black and gray shirt.

Both incidents happened between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., but police say they are unrelated. Police are increasing patrols around the schools and ask anyone with information to contact the Moline Police Department at (309) 797-0401 or Crime Stoppers at (309)762-9500.
