Barges Backed Up In Clinton, Iowa

Updated:

Seasonal low river levels have made a parking lot out of the Mighty Mississippi.

On Tuesday, August 27, 2013, there were about a dozen towboats backed up the Mississippi River between Clinton and Camanche, Iowa.

Some have been there for a couple of days.

The Army Corps of Engineers says the water is too shallow for the barges to get through because the river is low and sediment has collected in certain spots.

Officials say crews have been dredging since Monday night and hope to be done by early Wednesday.
They say it's not unusual for this to happen this time of year because the river is at its lowest and that towboats pushing barges usually just wait it out.
